Sometimes, using a good password might not be enough to protect our account against external invasions. It is recommended to use a two-factor authenticated environment in our most important accounts such as e-mail. However, if we’re really worried about our security, we can use USB Security Keys.

What’s a USB Security Key?

As its name indicates, it’s a traditional USB. It’s been modified not to store data but to serve as two-factor authenticated environment to access to our account.

Can we use any pendrive?

We might not; we will need a specific key allowing us to store the token that identifies us as the owner of the account. A specific software, able to communicate with services such as Google, is used for that aim.

How can I configure a USB Security Key?

Every online-service has its own protocol to configure its authentication in two steps and if we want to configurate one of these promotional USB, Google is one of the most popular services. Therefore, we will use it as example and we will follow the steps above:

  1. We will click My Account.
  2. We will click into Sign-in & Security Settings and then into Security Checkup. We must introduce our password and then click on Add Security Key
  3. Click on Register and connect the USB when we are asked to do so. If the key has a button (many do) we must click it during the process.
  4. Once the process is ended, our new Security Key will be ready. From now on, every time we want to log-in, apart from introducing our password, we will have to introduce the USB key and click the button again (if it has it) to complete the authentication process.

In this way, we can add a security layer to our account. That can be very important if we work with several computers, we travel a lot or we own a Chromebook, where Google password allows the access to all data we store in our computer.

In Customdrives® we have this kind of key so, if you want to, you can ask for a budget without commitment, we will be glad to attend you!

It’s the newest standard: the USB type C will be globally known as the connector USB-C and it takes part to the specification USB 3.0 and ended in August 2014 and was approved the 27th February 2015.

Of course, the question is how will affect this connector to our (technologic) lives and, of course, to our economy. This standard has many advantages Aimed at facilitating everything, making things faster and better.

Connect your cables with your eyes closed

The USB type C is different to the current USB cables or Micro-USB. Connector’s size is similar but its shape is different: it is reversible.

USB C - 01

There won’t be just one way to connect these cables to USB-C ports, something really useful. The idea is, also, to transmit different types of signals: data, music, video and energy.

Faster, higher, stronger

Basically: it is a USB made for loads of 100W (20V and 5A), which is more than enough to charge your computer but also to charge, at the same times, some phones. The power flow can be “negotiated” so power supply can be changed anytime and there’s no need to change the cable direction, what it means, a phone could charge a tablet or viceversa.

USB C - 02

Data rate is also interesting: 10Gbps, twice the speed of the current USB 3.0.

Is USB-C our future connector?

Enterprises such as SanDisk, LaCie or Apple already use this connector and if you ask for it, here in Customdrives® it is also made because we think USB-C is our future.

USB C - 03

First of all, we will have a transitional period where everything will have to be adapted, a small price to pay to improve our life quality, don’t you think?

You might have experienced sometimes: you insert the USB memory device in the computer and you’re told it is not recognized. Well, there are many possible causes for that, some of them are more serious than others, but most of the cases can be solved. At Customdrives® we will try to help you so if it happens, you can fix it as soon as possible.

All right, if the computer does not recognize the promotional USB, the first thing we should do is restart the computer. Most of the problems are solved this way and not recognizing the custom USB pen is not an exception. If it doesn’t work, we can disconnect the computer from its power source for about 15 minutes after switching it off. It can seem some kind of stupid idea, yes, but for some reason, it may work, so our advice is to try this. Another option could be connecting the personalized USB flash to another USB port, but it barely works (unless it’s a port with troubles).

Device Manager - Picture 1

Updating the USB driver

If none of those works, we should go a step further to see if the problem can be solved. So we will open the Device Manager. As you can see on the image, we should choose “Universal Serial Bus controllers”. When you right click into the USB you want, you choose the option Update Driver Software… to allow Windows 10 to update our USB driver.

Update Driver Software - Picture 2

If the personalised usb memory stick we want does not appear, we should go to Device Manager and right click into the first “Generic USB Hub” we find and choose the option “Update Sdriver Software”. We should choose “”Locate driver software (recommended)” and we will click on the option that allows us to choose the model Generic USB.

If by any chance nothing of this works, we will have to install the USB drivers again. But first, it is recommended to create a restore point or a security copy (just in case). After, we just have to go to “Generic USB Hub” right click on it and click on Uninstall. Once it is made, we will restart the computer so they get automatically installed. If it does not happen, we will go to the restore point we created not to have troubles.

If none of this works, we recommend you to go to another PC and try the USB, because it might be the USB the problematic and not the computer.

If one day, while you’re walking on the street, you find a USB embedded in a wall, be happy, because you are in front of a “Dread Drops”: one of the thousands of custom USB hidden around the world created to share information without Internet control.

This way is inspired by the system used by spies to exchange information on a secret place, without the need to meet.

But this current “Dead Drops” is more recent: in 2010, the German Aram Bartholl invented a formula to create an anonymous P2P network to allow the exchange of information and files without the need to connect to the Internet. He hid 5 pendrives around New York City. Look how he did it!

Two years later, in 2012, there were already 800 “Dead Drops” embedded in wals around the world (from Senegal to Tasmania including China, Japan, Kazakhstan or Iceland). Nowadays, there are thousands of “Dead Drops “ around the world.

What’s “Dead Drops” all about?

Nothing can be easier than creating a “Dead Drops”: a hole on a wall is made, the custom USB pen is embedded exposing the connector, it is sealed with cement and that’s it! Everybody can be connected!

It is said the personalized USB drive must be empty, only must have a file to explain what is “Dead Drops” and its aim. And it must be always in a place that is accessible to everybody, absolutely outwards and public.

Once it is made, the place where it is placed the memory it must be told to the website deaddrops.com so users can find it.

From that moment, anyone can connect his/her computer to the promotional flash drives and exchange as many files and information as s/he wants (music, pictures, films…).

No digital footprint

digital footprint

These files, as they are not shared by the Internet, don’t leave any digital finger print, which is a change in a world increasingly worried by the technologic invasion and the lack of privacy of citizens and where finding other ways to share files outside the Internet could be the key for the freedom of information.

“We need to raise again the freedom and the circulation of information” – Aram Bartholl, project initiator.

Also, many are using this system to share downloads, as Internet is not used, the Download Law is not violated.

But, be careful: some “Dead Drops” with malicious code or misleading information have been found. That precisely happened in 2015, where an investigation carried out by the German newspaper Express revealed that one of the custom USB pen embedded in a wall in Kölln (Germany) included instructions about how to manufacture a bomb. The PDF at issue also included chemical formulas to manufacture synthetic drugs such as amphetamines.

Map of these USB memories

deaddrop-nm-sm-750x500

Nowadays, there are thousands of external memories around the world. More specifically, while writing this e-mail, its website counts 1,649 “Dead Drops” around the world, storing 12,101GB (more than 12TB).

World map

The US are not an exception and this tendency is also arriving to our country. In fact, if you want to know where your nearest “Dead Drops” is found, the official website offers a map were you can consult cities where they are found. Cities such as London or Brighton are places where these pendrives can be found.

Will you be the next person to place a “Dead Drops” in your city? Tell us!

advantages and disadvantages of using usb devices storage or cloud storage

In this day and age, most companies have digitized archives. This is very convenient, since it allows for more than one employee to use them simultaneously and saves a lot of money and space rather than having all the documents in paper format. However, the storage and transport of files can still be troublesome at times. It’s true that the devices used to save our files have come a long way since the days of floppy disks. The main objectives that have led to these advances have been, on the one hand, the wish to have an ever increasing storage capacity and, on the other, the portability of archives, that is, the availability of our information from any location at any time.

In this sense, nowadays we have two options that seem to be always at odds with each other. The truth is that both have their advantages and inconveniences, and we cannot really say that one is better than the other. We’re talking about USB devices and Cloud storage.

USB memory devices have many functionalities and potential. This is because, aside from its main use as data storage and support to transfer documents, they are a great ally when it comes to protecting information from any intruders accessing our computer system.

But as well as this, over the last few years there has been a strong new trend: the services based on networks, where information is kept in virtualised storage environments made available to users under service agreements. This is what is known as storage in the Cloud. The companies devoted to safekeeping information only provide the user with an environment, and the users themselves are in charge of its administration. Such has been the success of these Cloud solutions that the leading companies in the technology sector, like Apple, Google or Microsoft, have already launched their own Cloud-based solutions.

With this in mind, the gradual disappearance of USB memory devices seems the next logical step, substituted by virtual environments. However, there are multiple factors that, in reality, suggest that said substitution is not going to happen, at least not any time soon. Both systems are coexisting, each with its own potential to explore, instead of pointless competition for leadership, because they are complementary.

  • Cloud solutions allow for quick, easy acquisition of any storage volume we may need, and to increase it as necessary.[br]
  • However, this means that we cannot keep our own information safe in any physical way, which may imply an enormous risk for data safety.
  • Data delivery always takes place under certain security conditions, information access and analysis, by the service provider. Each company has its own particular conditions for use. On the other hand, in the case of USB memory devices, the conditions for information use are set by the users themselves.[br]
  • For the access and synchronisation of information, Cloud storage forces us to have an internet connection for certain functions such as uploading and downloading, with a relevant transfer rate. When the connection is too slow or we are transferring data through a mobile device, this process can take a long time. But USB memory devices, which do not need internet access, can provide a greater transfer speed. [br]
  • The Cloud allows us to share information with third parties in an easy, quick way, but the lack of a physical device diminishes the brand impact and recall when the information is shared for commercial or promotional purposes, while a customised pendrive, boasting the colours or logo of your company, are a much better way to carry out this purpose.[br]
  •  USB memory devices can be used to run various useful applications and even operating systems directly from the USB unit itself.[br]

So, all these aspects tell us that Cloud storage cannot provide all the benefits that, as of today, USB devices can. For this reason, choosing one method or the other will depend mostly on the needs and priorities of each user. Both are compatible and can complement each other, with no need for competition among them.[br]

Technology is alive. New discoveries and inventions appear almost everyday and we all should be ready to get used to objects that we can even imagine now. The world of computing software develops really fast and sometimes we do not have time to be proficiency in the use of certain devices before having to change to other way of doing things.

Not many years ago science fiction films showed us people obeying the commands of a chip that someone placed on their brains, and heroes who could know things from others thanks to a kind of computer in their eyes. But that is not science fiction anymore. It is true that the evolution of technology is not exactly the same, but we are really close to those things that many filmakers imagined.

Optical chips are now a reallity. A group of scientists is working in the University of Valencia, in Spain, in order to get reconfigurable optical chips. As the magazine Nature Photonics tells in one of its articles, these scientists are currently working on a prototype manufactured on Indium Phosphide with the aim of getting an optical chip with two functionalities: filter and immediate frequency measurement. These scientists expect to get more complex chips by the end of the year with five or six functionalities using the same hardware configuration.

The creation of this type of chips is a complete revolution for telecommunications as optical chips will have great effectiveness. The fact of having reconfigurable chips will allow people to use the same hardware platform to create different chips, unlike now that scientists need to create three different chips out of three different platforms.

Professor Capmany, director of these studies in Spain, assures that this innovative chips will be very useful in several fields such as biomedicine or telecomunications, specially for 5G communications. These new chips will offer more powerful, smaller base stations with less power consumption.

Optical chips will be a reality by the end of the year, do you dare to talk about which hardware will be developed in 2017?

And, once more, it is Chritsmas! The Holidays arrive faster than we could imagine and it is time of happiness, lights, presents and the business Christmas gifts, of course.  It is very important to carefully think about which gift you will give to your clients and employees this Christmas because we are all hopeful about it. Do not forget that a good gift is taken with excitement but a bad gift will be remembered for years.

Let’s see some good and original business Christmas gifts so you can be de best boss ever. Or may be, if it is too late, you will have the best corporate gift next year!

Food and Beverage Gift Baskets

These type of baskets are very popular in Christmas and they are also very appropriate. There are baskets of all prices and we can choose almost any item we want to fill it. In many companies there are different baskets depending on the employee’s rank or the type of client who is getting the gift.

It is good to include the type of food and beverage that we use to take during the Holidays, in this way you can help your employees with their shopping basket.

Personalized USB

USB are very useful both for laboral and personal pourposes. If you decide to give your clients and employees an USB they will be delighted and they will find that gift really useful.

In order to have greater impact and surprise everybody the best option is to personalize the USB with the logo and colours of the company, or may be you can go further and customize the shape of the USB with any of the product you sell.

Charitable Donation

This is the best part of the year to give charitable donations as a gift to your employees. The clue here is to find the perfect charity, it is a delicate question. It is possible to let the recipient decide which institution will get the money, in this way they will feel as part of the project.

If you decide to choose a concrete institution or project make sure that you do not choose a controversial organization. Just think about it and choose someting with which everybody agrees.

Magazine subscription

If you know that most of your employees or clients read a certain magazine because it is related with your services and products, give them a subscription to it this Chritmas. They will really enjoy the gift and you will make sure that they are informed about what is happening in the market where you move. One year subscription is enough in this cases.

Books

If you choose a book as a gift you should choose a reknowned one, not any bestseller you find in the book store. You can choose the book which won a certain literary award or any classic book, these books are always in fashion. Among the classics you can choose The Scarlet Letter, Grapes of Warth, The Catcher in the Rye or The Great Gatsby, among many others.

And you, what gifts are you giving your employees this Christmas?

We live in a digital world that is why we use secondary memory devices very frequently, as it is the perfect way of protecting and carrying valuable information. Some time ago only big companies, technicians or young people were used to them but now almost everybody has at least one at home. And we are so used to them that we do not know what to do if they fail. This is the main reason why we should take care of our memory devices, if we do not follow some simple rules our devices will last much less than they could.

It is not very common that a secondary memory device breaks but it is very common to get them infected by virus, for example. This is the main cause of damage in this type of devices. And the real problem is not that our device cannot be used anymore, the big problem is that we can lose important data or infect our computers.

Viruses get very easily in secondary memory devices. If you want to keep not only your devices safe but also other computers where you use them, you should run the antivirus in your device any time you want to use it, above all if you used it in a public computer the last time. In order to make our memory device work better and delete all the temporal archives it may have, it is good to format it from time to time.

Once you finish the work you are doing and you want to unplug the device, you must do it correctly: choosing the secure way (all computers give you this option so there are no excuses).  You may be in a hurry and think that it is not necessary, but it will not take more than a couple of seconds that can save you many hours trying to recover all the data you lost.

If we have an external memory we must keep it clean. It is important to remove dust from the surface in order to avoid it getting into the internal part of the device. All external memories must be carefully treated and we must keep them far from liquids, grease and other dirt. If the device is clean outside, no dirt can go inside it and make it work badly. To make sure that your external memory is protected, you can cover it when you are not using it.

Some devices such as pen drives or memory cards can be badly damaged by humidity. Try to keep them in dry places and be aware that if you live in a place with great humidity, your devices may fail more easily than the expected in other places. Of course, as we already mentioned, keep all your electronic devices far from any liquid.

And last, but not least, it is important to make security copies of those important documents that you do not want to lose.

Remember that memory devices are very useful and easy to use, but they are not perfect and they can fail. If you take care of them they will give you a much better service.

We are all very used to our pendrives and we think we could not live without them, but the truth is that they were created very few years ago. Never the less, its story is very complete and interesting, let’s learn a little more about it!

USB 1.0

The first generation of USB was created in 1996 thanks to the association of several companies among which we can find IBM, Telecom or Microsoft. This pendrive is known as USB 1.0.

In 1998 IBM invented a new USB in order to substitute the diskettes in its new product: ThinkPad. Surprisingly IBM did not register this patent and, as IBM hired M-Systems to develop this invention, it still belongs to M-Systems.

In this way, M-Systems produced and commercialized the firsts USB in four different sizes: 8Mb, 16Mb, 32Mb and 64Mb. This product was sold during a long period of time and it was also developed until the size of 256Mb. M-Systems commercialized these products under the brand “Disgo” and they where the only pendrives in the market but, as you may already have imagined, some Asian companies developed cheaper copies in a short period of time.

USB 2.0

These pendrives are also called the second generation of USB although they do not really use the 480Mb completely due to some limitations on its technique specifications.

This type of USB are much slower than hard drives corresponding to the same times. Some of them can read data at 30Mb and write data at only 15Mb. You may think it is too slow, but you should take into account that it is about 20 times faster than the one USB 1.0 had. These pendrives were really fast at that time and they used a double channel for the first time in order to be faster.

USB 3.0

At the end of 2008 the third generation of pendrives was announced but it did not arrive to the market until the beginning of 2010.

With the arrival of USB 3.0 the speed of this type of devices was absolutely better and users were really happy. Besides, these pendrives were compatible with USB 2.0 ports.

USB 3.0 has a speed of tranfer of 5 Gb, a very important improvement if we compare it with the previous generation. The problem is that since 2011 USB 3.0 flash cannot use all its interface’s capacity because of the limitations its memory controllers have. In order to solve this problem some brands launched new controllers for the memory channels of USB devices.

If we compare the storage capacity of USB 3.0 and USB 1.0, the latests version is 1024 times bigger, that means 256GiB of memory.

Pendrives of the third generation are not only used as external hardware, they are also used in some other devices, such as wireless optical mouses, as an accessory.

USB 4.0

The forth generation of pendrives is much faster, note that it can transfer data at 10 Gbps. But it has some other improvements such as its small size, the possibility of tranfering up to 100 watts of energy (something which opens the door to many other possibilities of use) or the fact that it is reversible.

We do not know what is coming next, but we are sure that it will be incredible!

An USB is a small and quite estrange device that most of us use to carry information and to transfer it from one computer to another. We keep it in our pockets and do not think about it very much. But there are many uses we can give to our USB. Once you have read this article you will not think that it is a simple gadget anymore as you will find out some amazing uses of USB.

The key of your computer

You can use your USB as the key of your computer, that is to say, you can lock and unlock your personal computer thanks to your USB if you use it together with Operation Predator. Using both of them together your computer will be locked when you remove your USB, and no one will be able to open it without your pen drive.

Work securely

If you need to work from a remote computer but you need to work in a secure way, you can use your pen drive together with Democrakey. Democrakey will keep all your data secure even though you are using Internet on a public computer.

Take advantage of portable app and games

Nowadays we are used to many applications. We install these applications on our computers and we do not even realize that we are using them while we are working, that is why we are so upset when we cannot use them because we are not using our own computer. Thanks to our USB we can run our most beloved applications in any computer or device and we will not miss them anymore.

But as we also like to enjoy our free time, it is important to take into account that it is also possible to run games only by connecting our pen drive to a certain device. Are you ready to take up your game at any moment and any place?

Back up your important documents

Sometimes we do not have time backup the most important documents and information of our computer. If you need to secure some documents and you are in a hurry you can use your pen drive. We know this is not the ideal solution, but if you have your USB on your pocket you can record all the important data on it and forget about the possibility of losing it.

Make a wonderful gift

Sure you forget some important dates many times. Sure you had to run to the nearest shop to buy an improvised gift. Well, if you have an USB you do not have to worry. Thanks to this small device you can collect special songs, photos or information for that person you love. You will give them a really good gift, as it is personalised. And they will never know that you prepared it in the last moment.

If you always remember the important dates you can also give an USB as a present. You can order a special one, with special colours or shapes and it will be personalised twice. This can be the perfect gift.

And the best of all is that our USB is not heavy at all!
